Guitar.com Reviews the Carcosa Fuzz

Matt McCracken at Guitar.com recently spent time with our Carcosa Fuzz, and concluded that it is “a surprisingly versatile fuzz pedal that does far more than just the filthy sounds its dark graphics imply.”

Given the option to go either Demhe or Hali with the toggle switch depending on the guitar/amp setup, Matt plugged in his Telecaster and paired it with Fender clean amp base tone for the Demhe setting that enables you to plug in to a ‘clean’ amp setup that will “give a bass and low mid boost to help compensate sonically.”

While finding the right combination of the Before and After knobs that adjusts the amount of FUZZ, Matt stated that, “the interplay between the two controls gives you a dizzying amount of tonal options, so much so that we find it difficult to stop trying different combinations, and that’s before we even get to our two additional knobs toggle-switch setting,”

The humbucker loaded Les Paul was plugged in next, and it was paired with a dirt channel of an Orange combo. Of course, this time Hali mode was switched on that “cuts the bass of the pedal, ensuring it doesn’t result in that dreaded woolly ‘woof’ that comes from overpowering the low end.”

On pairing it with a Les Paul on a cranked up Orange, Matt described the sound as; “it’s a sound that begs for drop-tuning and a tempo of playing that proceeds at a crawl; gnashing and rasping in a way that makes you pull a face in the best kind of way.”

Then he added, “Crank the controls to the max and you get a broken, unpredictable fuzz sound that noise fiends will adore, as if you’re calling up the malevolent entity for which the pedal gets its unique artwork.”

Matt closes his review with remarks on his new discovery. “Much like the short story it owes its name to, the DOD Carcosa Fuzz is at first confusing, only to reveal hidden depths upon closer examination.”
